Bisbee Ride 2012 (Part 1)

I've been wanting to do a overnight ride to Bisbee for awhile.  It's an old mining town southeast of Tucson that has reinvented itself as an artist/crafts town.  I've driven by it many times, for work, but have never really stopped to explored it.  So I picked a date for a ride, and invited Kiri, the parents, and Tuyen along.

We left around 9:30ish.  The weather is starting to cool down a bit, so we didn't have to leave early to avoid heat.  Plus, we weren't going to be able to check into the hotels until 2pm.  Which allowed us to take our time getting there.  Horrible picture of me.  Who's quality checking these photos??
Oh my gosh!! All three boxes on the Explorer!  It had to be killing my dad that he couldn't just take one side box.  Since I don't have saddle bags on the Bonnie, and Kiri was taking up my cargo space, we threw our overnight gear in Tuyen and my dad's bags.  Why load down your own bike when you can load down someone else's?
After an enjoyable morning riding south to Green Valley, and then east, through the towns of Sahuarita and Sonoita, we arrived at our first destination.  The small community of Patagonia.  There was a small miscommunication on the matter of breakfast.  I told my dad that everyone should eat before getting to my place.  He heard that we'd be grabbing breakfast on the road.  After a failed attempt to stop at a Starbucks, their cash register was down and couldn't sell anything, we decided to push on until lunch.  Needless to say some people were starving by the time we had arrived.
So we grabbed food at a local coffee place.  My dad and I had eaten here on a trip last year.  After lunch we browsed some of the arts and craft shops.  Kiri bought a couple sets of earrings before we got back on the road.
The next stop was the city of Tombstone.  Tuyen wanted to explore, and I hadn't seen main street in some time.  So we found a shaded parking spot, next to the city's courthouse, and wandered through town.
There was an old spiral staircase on the side of the courthouse.  I'm sure this is how the judges sneak out to go have drinks between cases.
Making our way to main street.  You can hear the sound of the spurs as we walk.
The main drag.  Not a lot of tourists.  Traffic usually picks up on the weekends.
It's like the intro of an old western movie.  With odd looking town folk.
All sorts of shops, selling anything tourists are willing to buy.
Here we find a typical saloon girl of Tombstone.  Before I could ask her name, she ran off with some drunk cowboy. Floosey!
My dad mentioned there was a Harley Davidson store in town so we stopped by.  It was just a place to pick up clothes.  Not a dealership or anything.
They had a single bike in the store, made up to look old and western-ish.
 Always carry extra ammo!
Two strange looking fellows from out of town.  Must be from Kentucky or something.
Kiri had become parched touring the town.  Time for Gelato!  OK, truth is I just started screaming for ice cream until Kiri couldn't take it anymore and gave in.  That's her "One more outburst from you and we're going home" look.
The fudge looked tasty.  I'm watching my figure though, so I passed on sweets.
We sat outside and watched the stagecoach roll into town.
Deputy Chu kept an eye out for trouble.  Riff Raff has no place in his town.
 Yep, I married her.
And there it is, the actual O.K. Corral gunfight site.
Tuyen said I should have been standing in front of the coffin.
Having gotten our touristy western fix, we got back on the bikes and started heading for our final destination.  Bisbee!  We were smart enough to leave the camera with Kiri so she could get some action shots of the next leg.
The ride from Tombstone to Bisbee was amazing!  The clouds blocked just enough Sun to give a other worldly feel to the ride.  That, and riding up into the scenic hills that surround Bisbee is always beautiful.

Artistic shot of the day.  My parents and Tuyen in the mirror.
Mr. Chu testing out the light speed capabilities of his motorcycle.
 Can't forget the parents.
More pictures coming!  Until next time!

Alpine, September 2012

Just got back from a nice trip to Bisbee.  But I can't post those pictures until I get my last trip to Alpine online from waaay back in mid-September.  My uncle, and a friend of my dad's, were supposed to attend but were unable to make it at the last minute.  Kiri had signed up for a photography class that weekend and stayed at home.  So it was just me, the parents, and my grandfather.  My dad and I headed out Friday morning and we stopped in downtown Globe for lunch.  The old Sheriff's office.  Still in use from the looks of it.
I was taking a picture of the church and just happened to catch this fellow riding through.
Notice the hillside "G" for the city of Globe.
We stopped for lunch at the La Casita Cafe.  The sign stated they've been in business since 1947!
I have a tendency to order fajitas at Mexican restaurants.  These were quite tasty.  You can never have enough onions!
After lunch I took a quick stroll down the block to stretch the legs.
Soon we were back on the road.  We stopped at a roadside camping spot my dad wanted me to see.
And then again at the Salt River Gorge.
The clay in the water gave the river a nice reddish tint.
We made it to Alpine just as the sun was setting.  The temperature must have been in the 60 or 50's as it was a bit chilly as we pulled in.  The next morning I woke up early and found the sun shining through the trees.  I grabbed the camera and snapped a few pictures.
Later that same morning my parents and I took a small ride over to New Mexico.  My grandfather saw us off and wished us safe travels.
We made a small stop in the New Mexico town of Reserve.
There was a small monument to Elfego Baca here.  I yelled at my mom to dodge and weave!
The monument to Mr. Baca.
The local hunters had taken down an elk, which was in the bed of the the red pickup truck.  People were milling about and taking a look.  The temperature was a little warm so we pressed on.
We made our way north to the town of Quemado.  Before we left the Gila National Forest I snapped this picture at a road side stop.  That top case doesn't look like it would make a comfortable back rest, but my mom said it didn't bother her.
We filled up the tanks in Quemado and headed back to Alpine.  There's a small lodge just north of town that was having a Oktoberfest later that day.  Don't ask me why they were having it in September.  My mom thought it might be too cold in October, so they have it a month early.  Not sure if that's true or not, but it sounds good. We arrived back to the cabin, picked up my grandfather, and headed over.
Mmmmm, brats.
The lodge was having different contests.
This one involved being the first person to hammer a nail into a tree trunk.  Of course, most of the contestants had had a few beers _and_ they had to use the non-flat side of the hammer, which upped the level of difficulty.
I took a few pictures of people's bikes who were staying at the lodge.  This was a decked out Concours 1400.  I'm really leaning towards this bike as my next one.  Can you picture Kiri riding in style, resting on that plush Corbin top case?

This was a wild looking beast.  I believe it's a Honda Valkyrie Rune.
Soon the sun was setting and we decided to head back.  The end, to a nice "get away" weekend.
The next morning my mom and grandfather left early.  Leaving my dad and I to take our time on the way back.  I only took one picture on Sunday.  This was at a rest stop in New Mexico looking back towards the White mountains.  Until next time!

Space Shuttle Endeavour Flyover

Been awhile since my last post.  I took another trip up to Alpine, with the folks, last weekend that I still need to put together.  I'm in a procrastinating mood.  I'll try to work on it this evening...maybe.  In the mean time I thought I post some pictures of Space Shuttle Endeavour's flyover of Tucson.  The shuttle was being flown to California where it will be displayed as a museum piece.  They decided to flyover Tucson in honor of Gabrielle Gifford.  Her husband commanded Endeavour's final mission last year and asked if they could buzz Tucson to honor his wife.  Talk about pulling some strings!  I worked a night shift last night.  So I was lucky enough to have just gotten up and checked the news to see that I needed to be outside in five minutes to see the event. So I raced outside in my flip flops and sunglasses with camera in hand.  Here's what it looked like from my house.  Probably won't see anything like this again in my lifetime.
